15 States of Mind
Emotion (n) : From the Latin, ex (out) and movere (to move).
This project started as an attempt to express the light, movements and colours of emotions, a personal venture to communicate a feeling, a mood or a mental state at a particular time and through a versatile media- photography, an endeavour to make appear on film an outside depiction of what is felt deep inside.
Feelings enliven us, giving colour and texture to our experiences. To feel the full range of emotions is like painting with a complete palette of colours. And indeed it all started with painting; photography came to me only quite recently. None of it was intentional - it all developed and evolved over time, but I ended up trying to paint with my camera, sometimes quite clumsily but always with unrestrained enthusiasm. As Salman Rushdie in The Golden House reflects: “Maybe I’m a smart camera. I record, but I’m not exactly passive. I think. I alter. Possibly I even invent. (...) I am a camera that paints.” As with my painting, I took the road of abstraction, which gives the boundless territory to create and to distill emotions and ideas.
The label under each picture expresses the state of mind I personally was experiencing, but everyone should feel free to allow another emotion to rise in front of each of these pictures in the unlimited confines of their mind and bring in their own interpretations drawn from their own experiences.
